What is an Otaku?
I decided to create a blog on this topic because I am an otaku myself. As proof, I practical spend as much time as possible reading manga, watching anime, and/or playing Japanese video games. Currently, my most favorite manga, anime and Japanese video game (all in one) is: Chäos;HEAd.Otaku is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests; particularly in anime, manga, and video games. I guess otaku is another term for the word fan. Otaku in Japna use the term to describe themselves and their friends semi-humorously, accepting their position as fans. Some even use the term proudly to reclaim it from its negative connotations. Click the link below to view an otaku site: http://www.otakuzone.com/ on 08 February 2010 at 7:58 PM Types of Otaku
The reason I created this blog was to inform people that there are all kinds of otaku. You could be one yourself without even knowing it. All an otaku is really, is a person who is a fan of something that they are truly interested in. For example, those that are a big fan of Taylor Lautner, you can be considered an otaku. In modern Japanese slang, the term otaku refers to those that have an intrest in any particular theme, topic, or hobby. Common uses are anime otaku (a fan of anime), cosplay otaku and manga otaku (a fan of Japanese comic books). There are also pasokon otaku (personal computer geeks), gēmu otaku (playing video games), and wota (pronounced 'ota', previously referred to as "idol otaku") that are extreme fans of idols, heavily promoted singing girls. While these are the most common uses, the word can be applied to practically anything as long as it has a perspective view in a way (music otaku, martial arts otaku, cooking otaku, etc). at 7:57 PM Otakon
Named after the label otaku, "Otakon" (short for "otaku convention") is a convention known for focusing on anime, manga, East Asian culture, and its fandom. Otakon is traditionally held on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in late summer at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland's Inner Harbor district. It is considered the second largest and one of the longest-running anime conventions in the United States. Otakon offers a very broad range of programming, exhibits, and other events. Tens of thousands of people attend Otakon every year. People who expect to attend and arrive on the morning of Friday should be expecting to spend several hours in line to pick up their badges, though the lines usually die down by noon. Those that had pre-registered could just simply pick up their badges on Thursday and gain instant access to all convention events the next day. Basically, you save time to see all the events instead of waiting outside in line to get in. The Otakon of 2008 was said to have been the largest convention of its kind in the US. at 7:57 PM Current Popular
According to http://www.otakuzone.com/anime.htm on the 8th of February, the current most popular anime is/was: Ouran High School Host Club. This story revolves around a poor tomboyish student attends at a school for the ultra-wealthy, able to attend because of a scholarship, ends up working for the school's "Host Club"--and gets mistaken for a boy! On top of that, she has to obtain 1,000 customers to pay off her 8,000,000 yen (800,000 US dollars) debt. (Ouran High School Host Club is manga and the anime is based on the books like how any "normal" anime series.)Based on the current fans on http://www.otakuzone.com/manga.htm as of Feburary 8th, the most popular manga is: Vampire Knight. Cross Academy is attended by two groups of students: the Day Class and the Night Class. At twilight, when the students of the Day Class return to their dorms, they cross paths with the Night Class on their way to school. Yuki Cross and Zero Kiryu are the Guardians of the school, there to protect the Day Class from the Academy's dark secret: the Night Class is full of vampires. There is typically one way to determine if a person is an otaku. An otaku would most likely be anti-social but unexpectedly intelligent. And on rare occasions, an otaku may also be unexpectedly athletic. They may also be fairly "normal" aside from their interest in certain 'geekish' pursuits (video games, comic books, computers, etc.) Basically, if you think you have poor social skills and have an obsessive interest in a topic that may be strange or boring to others, you might be an otaku. Of course, it's not necessarily true that you could be one. (These are just common features that an otaku would have.)In the total end, just be who you are. If you are one, don't be ashamed but be proud. But remember "otaku" is a label. The most common reason why people become otaku is because they want the feeling of wanting to understand and the feeling of wanting to be understood. at 7:56 PM |
about me
Konnichiwa Minna! My name is Angelicca. I'm a lazy girl who is majority of the time 'occupied' with video or online games, manga, anime, or all of the above. I am unexpectedly capable of intelligence and athleticism, but I haven't joined any school clubs because of of my otaku interests. I am also an expert at pulling "all-nighters". my favorites
